How is a Japanese kids armor&robots type show get picked to be the base for a new Power Ranger show in America?

Just saw a bunch of them on U Tube I never heard of before and some look very cool.

Japanese kids show (non animated) from the 80’s sort of like Power Rangers. They controlled this big robot?

I cannot think of that japanese kids show that was not animated, I believe there were 5 of them and they would all get in this big robot man to defeat the enemy. I’m thinking it was the early 80’s. What is it???
